The painting surface I use is called "Aquabord", and it is manufactured by Ampersand Art Supply. It is a clay-coated masonite panel that gives me unprecedented freedom and control. After each piece is completed, I seal the surface with five coats of an acrylic spray fixative, followed by two coats of a UV filter polymer varnish. This enables my work to be framed without glass. For my more traditional works on paper, I use Arches 100% cotton rag watercolor paper.
For my recent abstract work, I am exploring with oil and cold wax medium on Ampersand panels, which is a completely new way for me to create art. I love the creamy consistency of the paint and the lovely matte surface that results. These pieces take more time to create and to dry, so patience is definitely a virtue!
